Parliamentary activities: Parliamentary Group on Population and Development
DSW’s All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on SRHR, the Parliamentary Group on Population and Development – founded in 2003 – works to ensure that the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Cairo Plan of Action (PoA) are implemented. To this end, the APPG, consisting of Members of Parliament from all political parties represented in the German Bundestag, organises hearings and resolutions, as well as public events in the German Parliament to motivate the German government to sustain and scale up its support for SRHR, the Cairo PoA as a means to achieve the MDGs.
The APPG meets frequently to discuss internal advisory matters, co-ordinate future activities and to meet with representatives of relevant high-level organisations and agencies, such as the UNFPA, IPPF and the World Bank.
DSW serves as the APPG's secretariate by informing, facilitating, exploring, networking and offering forums for discussing SRHR, HIV/AIDS related development issues in a comprehensive manner. DSW also supports PAC in the organisation of meetings, events such as the G8 International Parliamentary Conference on Economic Rewards for Investing in HIV/AIDS and Health in May 2007.
Additionally, DSW is hosting SRHR study tours for APPG members, offering in depth knowledge on the health situation on the ground and thus encouraging their engagement of the future.
